I ran across this saying on a poster in the rest-room of a bakery some years back. When I Googled it to find the author, I discovered that the quote was registered as a trademark by the now defunct Mayflower coffee and doughnut shops and reportedly appeared on every box of doughnuts they sold.
I consider myself an optimist, but yet… how many times do I have my eye on the “hole” rather than on the deliciousness of the doughnut?
How many times do I focus on the lack of something I want or some quality I think I should have, rather than focusing on the abundance in front of me, and the gifts I do have? How many times am I looking at the problem instead of looking at God?
It reminds me of a quote attributed to Julian of Norwich (c.1342-1416):
I look at you, I look at God, I keep looking at God.
Wise advice, indeed.
